A month ago, [livejournal.com profile] amberite's cat Batty (age 8) had some tooth problems, and afterwards, the vet told us to feed him soft food for a while. Feeding him his regular dry cat food moistened with warm water worked perfectly fine. He also enjoyed this, and kept asking for it weeks after he was fully recovered. Also, my cat DJ is 15 and a picky eater. After I put their food down, Batty looks expectantly at me, waiting for me to pour warm water over his cat food. Since Batty isn't eating, DJ is suspicious of the cat food and hopeful that something better will appear, and thus I kept pouring water over Batty's food.

However, much of the problem was that neither of them particularly likes their current food – an expensive prescription diet for cats with kidney problems. DJ has mild to moderate kidney problems and since this food isn't a problem for either of the other cats to eat, and they eat each other's food, we give all three cats this food ([livejournal.com profile] teaotter's cat Buddy, who is also 15, is rarely a problem, since he's seldom encountered a food he didn't like).

In any case, in the past I gave all three cats a small amount of their old food sprinkled on top of their new food to encourage them to eat it. However, I was worrying about how much of that food (which DJ shouldn't particularly have) DJ was eating. Stopping this lead to DJ becoming even more finicky. Then, I took some of that food, pounded it to powder with a hammer (not particularly wanting to flavor my blender of food processor with cat food) and sprinkled it over all the cats' food. They all clearly love this option (Buddy included), to the point that Batty has ceased to ask for warm water on his food. Also, the amount required is quite small.

Yes, I now apply condiments to my cats' food. Anyone who knows my own love of exotic condiments will find this especially amusing.
