I was just reading a SF novel (Spider Star by Mike Brotherton) where archaeologists used LIDAR to instantly map archaeological sites, and here it is about to enter use for modern combat. Definitely something anyone writing a SF novel or an RPG with combat or detailed sensor use needs to keep in mind. I've never done archaeological fieldwork, but I studied enough about archeology to know that this is going to be the must-have gadget for archaeologists in a decade or so (when it becomes affordable for civilian organizations). Hopefully, rescue workers like firefighters will get access to this tech and LIDAR/radar combo units even sooner. In similar news, it also looks like lasers are the next big thing for non-invasive medical diagnostics.
