heron61: (Look to the future)
Yet another SF classic is about to become consumer technology. A company called Emotiv will be releasing a video controller that's a headset that uses the player's brainwaves for input. So, in a month or two, we have the first electronic paper ebook reader/media player that folds up into the size of a small cellphone, sometime this year, we'll have the first display/augmented reality glasses for sale, and by the end of the year, we'll have headsets for brainwave controlled video games. There are even proposals for tattoo-based interfaces.

Consider how rapidly the iphone has made it onto TV shows. In no more than two years, we'll have non-SF shows where wealthy or tech-savvy characters use some or all of these devices. We're also going to be seeing a few people using them on the street, and the world will start looking even more like one of the less grim cyberpunk novels. Within 5 years, I'm certain folding electronic paper displays will be quite common, I'm betting display glasses will becoming increasingly popular, and gods only know what the state of console games will be like. I'm no longer willing to make any predictions about life in 10 years, and in 20 years, I'm betting that among various other wonders, discussions of when the first true AIs will be created will either be historical documents or a hot topic in the geekier sections of the news.

Such is how the future arrives, and for the next half century or so it's going to arrive faster every day.

I haven't had a check-up in around 6 years, and within the last few months, my formerly crappy medical insurance (through Lifewise) recently raised its rates by $40/month and morphed into moderately non-crappy insurance, which includes free yearly checkups.

The problem is that I don't have a regular doctor. Therefore, I'm seeking one. Ideally, they'd be in Portland, not the far suburbs, be both skilled and inclined to actually listen to their patients, accept Lifewise insurance. If you know of any physicians who meet these criteria, please let me know. If you know of anyone who meets the first two of these criteria, but don't know if they meet the third, let me know and I'll find out.

To be clear, I'm only seeking actual MDs, I have no faith or interest in naturopaths or other "alternative health providers" as anything other than potential back-ups to medical care.
